Summary

COVID-19 has impacted our members’ physical and mental health and disrupted their financial stability. The challenges of this pandemic have been a catalyst for change and innovation, unifying our organization as we adapt to evolving member needs. Our COVID-19 responses have leaned into improving the virtual care experience for our members.

E-visits

E-visits

At a time when social distancing and staying at home are paramount, virtual care solutions are essential. Through technology, operations and innovation partnerships at Kaiser Permanente, a COVID-19 E-visit was built at the start of the pandemic so KP members could self-assess their symptoms at home and receive a clinical diagnosis with treatment recommendations. Our current 24-7 COVID-19 E-visits order diagnostic testing, antibody testing, and provide work/school notes to members. About 3 Million COVID-19 E-visits were taken between March 2020 and March 2021.

Remote Patient Examination

Remote Patient Examination

To conserve limited personal protective equipment (PPE) and minimize COVID-19 exposure for our members and care teams, we deployed remote patient examination devices (RPE) in emergency rooms and skilled nursing facilities across Southern California. Remote physical examinations allowed members to be virtually examined for COVID-19 symptoms by a physician in real-time, using a proven medical grade device.

Home Monitoring

Home Monitoring

The COVID-19 Home Monitoring Program allowed us to care for patients in their home and increase our capacity to care for patients who have tested positive for COVID-19. In the comfort of their home, members received remote diagnostic devices (e.g., digital thermometers, pulse oximeters) and were remotely monitored by our care team. Over 7,800 members were enrolled in Kaiser Permanente’s COVID-19 Home Monitoring program between April 2020 and  2020.

Virtual Care's Acceleration

COVID-19 has accelerated the demand for virtual care options. In response, we worked with physicians across 11 different specialties to develop virtual care tools to set us up for a better tomorrow. As part of this work, we are creating new E-visits self-assessment surveys, pre-visit questionnaires, and evidence-based educational handouts and videos to facilitate the rapid expansion of our virtual care ecosystem.
